The tradition of library services in Bellbrook had roots in the early 1900's. The building, which dates back to 1901, is located in Bellbrook's Old Village and has offered library services to the community since 1906. The original structure of 595 sq.ft was built as a bank and opened it doors September 14, 1901. Jonathan and Susan Winters of Dayton, and summer residents of Bellbrook, acquired the building after the bank failed. In 1906, they donated it to the Sugarcreek township trustees with a stipulation in the deed requiring that the building be used only as a library and never mortgaged or conveyed for any purpose. Ownership of the land and the building was tranferred to the City if Bellbrook in 1987. There have been two additions to the building, one in 1965 and another in 1980, bringing the building to its present size. Additional land was purchased and the parking lot built in 1996. The dedication of the Jeanette Dunham Memorial Garden, designed and maintained by the Bellbrook Garden Club, was held August 26, 2000. Over the years the community has continued the vision of a public library that began with the Winters family in 1906, a collection of donated books and volunteers. That same vision and commitment to library services guides us as we plan for the future. A History of Winters Library (1988) by Donna Gibson is a available at the library. |
