What is Instant Messenger (IM)?
IM is a way of communicating with others over the Internet. It allows two people to type messages to one another and have a virtual "conversation."

What do I need to do to IM a librarian?
If you already have an IM account, simply add us to your buddy list and then open a chat with us. If you do not want to download any software, you can use AIM Express or meebo.

Will a librarian answer right away, or will I have to wait?
Patrons visiting the library in person will have priority. However, we will answer your question as soon as we are able, on a first-come, first-served basis.

I have a question about my library card account. Should I be concerned about giving my personal information to GCPL staff on IM?
The library does not save any logs of chats, nor do we save e-mails unless they are of a threatening nature. We will not publish personal information that is discussed in our sessions.

If you have a Hotmail or MSN e-mail address, then you already have a MSN Messenger name. If you do not have a MSN account, you can create one as part of the Messenger setup. Just follow the directions.
